Gondal
Capital: Khangai

Ruler: Khan Kassar Altan

The Land

Gondal is the largest kingdom in the known world, controlling the entirety of the eastern continent. Despite its size, there is only one established city within Gondal and that is Khangai, the dwelling place of the Khan. The remainder of Gondal is comprised of steppe plains with some scattered forests. In the northern part of Gondal is a small mountain range, with one toweringly huge mountain called the Skyhook.

The People

Gondal has only one established city, Khangai. Within the city are holdings for each of the nine major tribes. Smaller tribes are also represented within the city, but their presence is not as vast. The major tribes are Baruun, Kherrid, Shiranod, Yaamutad, Khonkhotan, Bagatur, Manchu, Khonichin, and Naiman. The imperial tribe is Altan. Within the steppe region, these tribes travel constantly so they do not have any established holdings. Their rank within the city is greatly influenced by the amount of livestock held on the steppes as well as success in skirmishes with other tribes.

Inter-tribe warfare is highly common. The Gondal people are a fierce lot and arguments occur frequently. The Khan’s code, however, prohibits excessive killing. It is more common for the winning tribe to accept ransom from the losers, or to absorb or enslave the lesser tribe. The Khan’s code reminds them that the true enemies lie outside of Gondal and that to kill any Gondal is to weaken the whole of the nation.

Lest one think that Gondal cherishes nothing but battle, never forget that they are superb storytellers and artisans as well. Their skills with the crafting of bows and blades is exceptional. Their art and poetry can rival that of Dechaine, though with a distinctly different style. Bards are highly recognized within the society for they can make a lonely night pass quickly and carry a hero’s life on past his death. So long as an individual can make a worthy contribution to the tribe, he or she is precious. Those who do not contribute are not tolerated.

Recent Events

The bloodline of the Khan has continued unbroken for 900 years. The eldest male heir of the Khan always claims the throne. Five years ago, the last direct male descendent of the Khan perished. Juchin Altan had only one child, a girl named Kassar. Some tribes protested that a woman could not become Khan. Fortunately, Juchin’s brother, Bayar, stood beside the young woman. He is commonly said to be the greatest warrior in Gondal and few were willing to risk his wrath. Thus far, Kassar has shown herself to be quite capable of ruling Gondal. Her skill with the bow is worthy of her heritage and her quick mind makes her adept at managing the fractious tribes of her people.
