Capital: Sairynce
Ruler: Parel Santoro di Vosti
The Land
The land of modern day Salceny dominates the large southern peninsula of the Brythenian continent. The impressive mountains of the Sanguine Divide and the heavily forested northern expanses serve as a natural border with its neighbor, Dechaine.
Salceny's prominent access to the ocean and two easily navigable rivers, make the majority of the country easy accessible and provides an excellent backbone for its legendary trade empire. While its lands are not as fertile as those of Dechaine, Salceny still boasts an impressive production and resources including timber, wine, assorted consumables and modest mining in the northern reaches.
History
Until just a few centuries ago, Salceny was part of the extended Dechaine empire, but with the dissolution of the greater empire Salceny began to experience independence under a regional monarch. Despite efforts at reunification, Salceny remained unwilling and after an intense and bloody exchange it established itself as a unique political entity.
Because of its fractious evolution and strong regional loyalties, most of Salceny's organization stemmed from city-states headed by merchant-princes and minor nobility. With time the Vyori or ruling families became distinct and recognized the need for a national representation not to mention the pressure of the expansionism of its formidable neighbors. While the Parel of Salceny is its ultimate ruler, it would be unwise to underestimate the power and influence of the Paros of the individual city-states.
Since the age of the Parels, Salceny has experienced unprecedented growth in the form of trade and exploration. While not the powerhouse of Gondal or Dechaine, Salceny exerts itself as a primary agency of travel, shipment and fashion. Its army is modest but the state does maintain well-trained and widely distributed mercenaries. Most of Salceny's naval power is in the form of trade ships, but their conversion to military vessels is not a possibility that is lost on its rivals.
The People
In general the people of Salceny have adopted a degree of tolerance for new and unusual things, essential in their nation's vitality. While economic and social distinctions can be quite strong, racial and gender bias are largely unknown. Salcenians as a whole are an adaptive and practical folk, incorporating a diverse number of technologies, practices and discoveries, but they are quick to defend their own country's superiority in a wide variety of areas. Deprived of nationalism, many Salcenians fall back to their regional preferences which can run quite deep. Even after its unification, many Salcenians note their city-states before their nationality. However, they are quick to close ranks to outside threats, not having forgotten the tribulations of their ancestors.
Most Salcenians are privately educated or received tuition as part of an apprenticeship. A few can boast of educations abroad at the academies of Andrynn, the primary exception being those with the gift for Cambiarre and Lirite arts who are strongly represented in Salceny and almost exclusively tutored natively.
Non-humans are a small minority in Salceny as is the case with most of the world. The exception being the Murrow who are commonplace and well integrated into the culture as a whole, despite being somewhat antisocial by human standards.
In general, Salcenians are considered hot-blooded, passionate and sophisticated; traits most Salcenians are quite proud of and exercise with flair.
