Slana'ar
These lizard-like humanoids are found primarily in the Eastern Wastes of Gondal and are made up of nomadic tribes. Slana’ar have always been common in Gondal, though they have recently begun to appear in the lands in the southwest of Dechaine. Slana’ar merchants and peddlers are becoming almost commonplace in the markets of Salceny. They are welcome in Khangai in Gondal and some are even members of the Khan’s elite guard. They are expert swindlers and deal makers and seem to thrive on the hustle and bustle of large cities and marketplaces. They guard their property fiercely, and are known for creating fiendish traps to foil any who would rob them.

They are also known to have extremely violent tempers. A slana’ar who feels that his honor has been slighted or he has been wronged in some way will not rest until he is avenged. The people of Gondal still recall the days after the Sundering when the slana’ar waged war against every other living creature. Many claim that it was these continual skirmishes, combined with the natural fractiousness of the Gondal people, which allowed the Great Khan to unite so many men under his banner and eventually unite all of Gondal.

The slana’ar are above all else a practical people, always looking for a way to turn a situation to their advantage. It may be for this reason that the slana’ar as a group are so accepting of all the schools of magic; anything that will provide an advantage is viewed as a good thing. Their only true fear is of the Lirité. That schools reputed association with Risalka is seen as tempting the evil fates and few slana’ar will willingly associate with those folk. Though some humans assume them to be barbarians for their strange ways and monstrous appearance, the slana’ar have also produced many of the greatest scholars the world has seen. Their influence has helped bring the Nokutai Naran to their strong position as the spiritual leaders of Gondal. Knowledge is tremendously valued by the slana’ar.

Special Rules

Slana'ar characters may purchase Resist Fire (3 Character Points) and Suggestion (9 Character Points). These abilities may be purchased a maximum of three times each, though the full cost must be paid each time.

Slana'ar may not use bows, though they may use crossbows. Slana'ar characters have a natural knack for the workings of traps, and can purchase the Create Trap skill at half cost. No slana'ar character may learn Lirite magics.

Not surprisingly, slana'ar are lousy swimmers and are prone to seasickness. In addition, due to the fiery temperaments shared by their kind, all slana'ar characters must have a subject/situation that angers them. This can be anything from a hatred of children to a prejudice against blacksmiths ("One of your lot swindled my father out of his life's savings, you scum!!"), or anything else the player comes up with (subject to approval).

Required Makeup

Slana’ar must use full facial makeup of red and/or orange. If both colors are used, they should be used consistently in a distinguishable pattern. A properly painted bald cap can be worn to complete the effect, though it is not required.

Slana’ar Cultural Variations

Dechaine

Few Slana’ar travel the great oceans. Most have a natural aversion to large bodies of water. Those that braved the journey found themselves in the lands of many cities. The merchant houses of Salceny and the great families welcomed the slana’ar to their markets for they each found worthy foes in each other for the battle of trading. But the walled cities and the cultivated lands of Salceny were not familiar, nor comfortable for the bulk of the slana’ar looking for a new home. They did, however, find what they were looking for southeast of the Great Barrier Mountains in Dechaine on the southern coast.

The southern coast was sparsely inhabited by the people of Dechaine. Its proximity to the Great Barrier Mountains and the Nothing Lands made it a mysterious, frightening, and sometimes dangerous land. The slana’ar settled there without much fuss. The lands were flat and fertile away from the Great Barrier Mountains and minerals were found at the base and in the hills of the mountains. A rich land overlooked and forgotten by the people to the north and east for largely superstitious reasons.

Always ones to find prosperity in any situation, the slana’ar of this area have made their wealth from the plentiful mud that surrounds them. They have become known for their exquisite pottery, rendered with an artistry and delicacy unexpected for their race. Even in this new land, the slana’ar ability to forge a rich life out of nothing can be strongly seen. They travel across the Sanguine Divide to trade in the markets of western Salceny on a regular basis.

Gondal

The Slana’ar of Gondal have almost completely blended with the rest of the tribes that form this great nation. They are still a bit wary of the other people of the steppes, but the old war has long since moved from the battlefield to the bartering table. The slana’ar have taken great interest in the bazaars of the city. Very little of the violent xenophobic culture they embraced so long ago still exists in Gondal today. There are still some rumors and superstitions, but for the most part slana’ar are simply a part of the commonplace in Gondal.

After the Khan united all of Gondal, the slana’ar were drawn to the passionate visions of the Nokutai Naran. Their wisdom spoken by the Naran appealed to the slana’ar and they learned to channel their passion into new pursuits. They now form the bulk of this order and work closely with their human, elven, and duergar compatriots. The acceptance they found in the Naran allowed them to learn more about the rest of Gondal. Now there are even slana’ar within the Khan’s personal guard, within the ranks of the Kelet, and ever-present in the bustle of the market.
